Budo for Food International: As a sponsor,
demonstrator or coordinator, your contribution is welcome
and appreciated. The
Budo (Martial Arts) for Food program is non-profit and 100%
of all proceeds go to local charities and food banks
History of Budo for
Food:

Started
in 1993 by Sensei Earl Robertson of the Yoshukan
Karate Association, the original event was held in Montreal,
Canada. Sensei Earl Robertson brought together 10 different schools
of martial arts to demonstrate their respective arts and support
a local food bank. Each
school demonstrated their art for 6-10 minutes with the price
of admission non-perishable food item. Over 500 spectators
attended and Budo for Food was born! In
1994 , the Langley, BC Karate dojo joined the effort and
brought together local
schools to support Budo for Food for a BC-based charity.
In 1995, the Ottawa Chito Ryu karate Dojo, under Sensei Harvey
Brown joined Budo for Food and held a successful event in
the nation's capital. In
1996, Hong Kong (Sensei Jonathon Marsh) and Toronto (Sensei
Earl Robertson) brought Budo for Food to their cities. In
Montreal, the event was taken over by Sensei Louise
Provencher of the NDG Karate Club. In
each event, the local directors contracted, coordinated and
hosted the show with proceeds going to local food banks.
The event is truly a win/win/win situation as local food
banks benefit, the demonstrators get good publicity for their
art and clubs and the spectators get a wonderful show at
a reasonable admission price. Another
recent aspect of Budo for Food has been the addition of supporters.
In the recent years, local grocery stores, businesses and
corporations have generously donated proceeds to the charity.
Local media has also been very supportive and advertising
before and after the event. In fact, some of the events have
received television coverage as a results of the quality
of demonstrations. The
future is exciting for all of us at Budo for Food as
we work towards a truly international event with participation
from cities around the world.
